Your Right to a Good Faith Estimate

Under the federal No Surprises Act, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate explaining how much your mental health care will cost.

Health care providers are required to give clients who are uninsured, or who are insured but not planning to use their insurance benefits, an estimate of the expected charges for services. This applies to psychotherapy, assessment, and related services.

What This Means for You

  • You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency services, including psychotherapy.

  • You can ask us for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service, or at any time during treatment.

  • We will provide a Good Faith Estimate in writing at least 1 business day before your scheduled service if you schedule at least 3 business days in advance, or at least 3 business days in advance if you schedule at least 10 business days ahead. If you request one, we will provide it within 3 business days.

  • If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill through the federal patient-provider dispute resolution process.

  • Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.

How This Applies to Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is ongoing and open-ended by nature, and the number of sessions someone will find helpful cannot always be known at the outset. Our Good Faith Estimate will state our per-session fee and provide a projected range based on an anticipated course of treatment. This projection is an estimate, not a treatment plan or a commitment on your part — you are always free to continue, pause, or end therapy at any time, and the frequency and length of treatment are decisions we make together.

If your circumstances change, or if we anticipate the estimate will no longer be accurate, we will provide an updated Good Faith Estimate.

If You Are Using Insurance

The Good Faith Estimate requirement applies to clients who are uninsured or who choose not to use their insurance benefits. If you plan to use in-network insurance benefits, your costs will be determined by your plan's copay, coinsurance, and deductible, and you should contact your insurer for details about your specific coverage.

If we are out of network with your plan, we can provide a superbill you may submit to your insurer for possible reimbursement. Reimbursement is determined by your plan, and we cannot guarantee any particular amount.
